Memorial Day weeekend at Ocean City

Morgan’s daycare was closed on Friday so we took an extra long holiday weekend to head out to the beach. Grandparents Wetzel were also able to come down Friday evening and join us.

Morgan liked the water much more than last year, including a trip into the absolutely freezing ocean, which she seemed to think was hilarious.

Special treat en route — I hadn’t given it any thought until we found ourselves ordering it — Morgan’s first Happy Meal.

Morgan photo dump

After a few off months, I’m trying to ramp back up the photo-taking.

Morgan helping clean up the old apartment (the funniest was after she saw me pull a “childproof” outlet protector off, she ran around the entire apartment pulling them out of all the remaining outlets… oh well), a revisit to the annual Mother’s Day Tradition of going to Sports Pub for brunch, and a revisit to the big girl swing.

Morgan continues to mature

There is so much going on with Morgan these days, it really is tough to keep up.

This morning in the car Jim sneezed.  I said ‘bless you.’ Morgan usually says ‘ah-choo’ or ‘ah-choo Daddy.’  Today she said “bless you Daddy.’

The other day there was a minor crisis at daycare.  Jim and I were there picking Morgan up and going through the end-of-the-day potty routine.  One of the teachers brought a handful of the older Toddler 2 kids in from playing outside for a bathroom break.  And one of the kiddie toilets started overflowing. So the teacher had to go to another room to call someone.  Jim is tiptoeing through the growing pool of water trying to figure out how to shut it off.  And I’m standing there surrounded by kids in various states of pants-wearing, many starting to get upset by the change in routine, sudden flurry of activity, and advancing water line. So I manage to move them outside of the bathroom and on the other side of a very small lip in the floor (sufficient to keep the water in the bathroom).  One of the kids starts getting super upset and Morgan goes over and starts rubbing her back.  Then Morgan starts to get upset because I needed to go into the bathroom to get some diapers.  So I asked her to hold another girls hand until I got back.  She did. And it calmed her down.  So cute!

We went to George’s last Saturday (as we often do).  Morgan was interested in getting a balloon for the first time.  And we managed to convince her to be gentle with it.  I was sure she was going to pop it with her nails or through sheer force of hugging, but we managed to escape unscathed.  As we were walking up to George’s she was saying “George’s! George’s!”

She loves the new house.  She loves being able to look out the windows and see things going on. And she loves being able to get outside from the front door.

She has gotten much easier to maneuver in a car seat.  Sometimes she even helps buckle herself in now.

Allergy results

Allergic to:
* peanuts
* pistachios

Mildly allergic to:
* sesame seeds
* cashews
* almonds

The big question is how we deal with it. A lot of people with severe (deadly) nut allergies only eat very controlled food — food they’ve created themselves, frankly. Eating out and eating prepared foods from the grocery always carry a risk of cross-contamination (was the chicken finger fried in the same oil as something with nuts?), nuts are everywhere (sesame seed buns, unknown pastries), and lots of things contains nuts and nut oils that you don’t know about (e.g. Asian/Mexican food). Some people can’t touch nuts externally, some people can’t even be in the room with peanut dust. And some people claim that the reaction gets worse with each exposure.

However, Morgan hasn’t shown a severe reaction to anything other than actual ingestion of peanuts, has had plenty of external exposure to nuts, and has not exercised any caution whatsoever about what to eat.

So, we’ll probably have to consult with specialists and learn more about the risks and decide which we’re all willing to bear. Meanwhile, probably no more Five Guys and no unknown pastries from Starbucks, but we probably won’t stop going to frequent haunts such as Sine and George’s until we become more convinced that living in a bubble really is prudent.

Playing in fountain

Morgan was delighted by this fountain at National Harbor (and the crowd was delighted by her). This carried on, exactly like this, for at least 10-15 minutes.
